[livejournal.com profile] lauriegilbert gave the following prompt: Kirk, McCoy - The Book of Love for my holiday card exchange.

The Book of Love

As soon as Leonard shut the guestroom door – almost all the way, but not clicked, per the occupant's strict instructions – he was enveloped in the warm, very welcome arms.

″She out?″ Jim said against Leonard's nape, before pressing a kiss against the skin just below his hairline.

″Yup, though it took about a dozen stories, two pillow fluffings, a glass of water, and promises of presents galore, courtesy of Santa Claus.″ Leonard leaned back into Jim's embrace and rubbed his hands over his eyes. ″I'm beat. Did you manage to finish all the wrapping? I'm sorry I didn't get out in time to help.″

″It's fine, and yeah, we're all set. The stockings are hung and presents are piled and there will be an ecstatic seven-year-old tomorrow morning.″

″Bright and early,″ Leonard didn't bother to hide the dread that thought gave him and he could feel Jim's laughter against his back.

″Bright and early,″ Jim confirmed, giving Leonard a squeeze before releasing him. ″Before we head to bed, though, I have a little something I'd like you to open tonight.″

″Oh?″ Leonard followed Jim's retreating form down the hallway and into the living room, merrily lit by the lights from the windows and the shining tree.

″Yup, I think this gift is better opened without an audience.″

Leonard raised an eyebrow but accepted the package that Jim offered to him. It was large and rectangular, wrapped in gold, and clearly a book of the paper-and-ink variety. Wondering what sort of book Jim would give to him that he couldn't open in front of his daughter, Leonard carefully unsealed the edges of the wrapping and carefully removed it while Jim huffed impatiently.

″The Book of Love?″ Leonard could feel his right eyebrow rise. ″You got me a sex book, Jim?″

Jim looked back at him, expectation written clear across his face.

Leonard sighed, opened the cover and began paging through the book, stopping occasionally to smile, wince, or do a double-take at several of the illustrations. The book was apparently a collection of erotica and sex guides from various planets.

The first section appeared to be devoted entirely to the Terran Kama Sutra and the second and third had some excellent Orion references that Leonard had only heard of before. He was just getting a peek at section four – and holy crap was that a pointed ear tip he saw? - when Jim broke in.

″There's also an optional data disc in the back offers a more in-depth history, pictures and photos, and a how-to guide.″

″This is... very impressive.″ Leonard thumbed through the book again, pausing on an image of two exceptionally flexible humanoids engaged in some very interesting sexual gymnastics.

″So you like it?″

″Never would have thought to get it for myself, but yeah. Yeah, I do.″ Leonard smiled at Jim and was pleased to see the expression reflected on Jim's face.

″Excellent, because I was thinking that, for tonight, we could maybe try one or two out, there's a really interesting picture on page thirty two that-″

As Jim extolled the virtues of the various activities he bookmarked especially for them, Leonard caressed the smooth cover of the text, tossed it gently onto the cushion of the couch, and grabbed Jim by the shirtfront. As he pulled Jim into a kiss, Leonard thought that, although he loved research, he was all for jumping straight into practical application.

So he did.
