It took me all day to think of something appropriate to help celebrate both April Fool's and the start of [livejournal.com profile] wellymuck. I ended up borrowing lightly from an idea I used back in [livejournal.com profile] scarvesnhats.

Title: Something About Gryffindors, Part II
Author: [livejournal.com profile] exiled_mind
Rating: PG-13 for a wee bit of language
Summary: A mildly exasperated Madam Pomfrey tends to her first victims of the day.
Author's Noted: Feedback is always appreciated, as I've been struggling in the throes of writer's block for nearly a month now, and I could use all the help I can get.

“Have a seat, gentlemen.” Madam Pomfrey spared a brief, sardonic smile at the appellation. Although she retained hope for young Remus Lupin, she was quite certain that the term would never be one that could be applied to Sirius Black.

She made them wait while she finished sorting and cataloging the potions in her storeroom. They didn’t complain of the delay, though she could see them squirming – Lupin scratching at the scarlet spots that covered his arms and neck and Black still steaming a bit from the ears, although his hair had been extinguished.

Once her task was finished, she selected the potions she would need and proceeded to assess her first patients of the day.

There was something about Gryffindors. It never failed, year after year; her first patients on April Fool’s morning were always Gryffindor students. And for the past three years, that tradition held especially true for Misters Black, Lupin, Potter, and Pettigrew.

As suspected, the ailments were rather straightforward, if uncomfortable for their targets, and after instructing them on avoidance of all manner of pranking and the administration of the potions, she told them to wait a few minutes to be sure they were healing properly.

Having had extensive experience with both young men – and both only third years at that! – Madam Pomfrey knew that the likelihood of them abstaining from further trouble that day was extremely low. As they’d already graced the hospital wing with their presence by eight o’clock in the morning, she’d best check the effectiveness of the potions in the spare storeroom as well – Pettigrew, Potter, and a number of other students would likely not be far behind.

Pausing by her cabinets to return the used vials for future cleaning, she could hear low conversation between the two boys, their heads bent towards each other conspiratorially.

“Right brave of you to step in front of that hex.” Black said, absently rubbing his left ear.

“I figured you had enough to deal with, what with your hair being on fire. Can’t say I’d do it again, though, what with all the itching.” Lupin’s eyes remained on his forearms, watching his spots slowly fade.

A grin flashed across Black’s face. “Sure you would. You’re quite protective of me, you know.”

Lupin’s snorted in response, but his words held a hint of affection. “Someone needs to be. Merlin knows you can’t be trusted to take care of yourself.”

Lupin glanced around quickly before lowering his voice further, though Madam Pomfrey could still hear him. “Snape does know how to duel, I’ll give him that. Not terribly creative, though”

I’d give him nothing more than my fist to his colossal nose, bloody bastard.” The scowl across Sirius Black’s face did not bode well for the chances of a peaceful remainder of the day.

Madame Pomfrey released a sigh; at least the Ravenclaws were more subtle in their celebrations of the first of April, and the Hufflepuffs rarely caused permanent damage. She had a feeling that she would be having several long talks with Professors McGonagall and Slughorn before this day was through.

With a sigh, and a slight rolling of her eyes, Madam Pomfrey ushered the boys out of the hospital wing with yet another admonition about the dangers of fighting – a warning that would, she was certain, go unheeded – and returned to her storeroom.

Something about Gryffindors indeed.
